Herbal Remedies for Anti-Aging

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Herbal remedies have been around for hundreds of years. They help with everything from stomach aches to arthritis pains, and although I haven’t found an herb that claims to turn back the clock, they all contribute to anti-aging by promoting your health and well-being.

Before you consider using any herbal remedy for your aches and pains, consult your doctor. Herbs can react with medication you are already taking, and they can have as many adverse reactions as synthetic medicines can. It’s important to consult a doctor so you know exactly what to expect from the herbal remedies you choose.

After you consult your doctor, here are a few herbs that are easy to find and remedies that are easy to apply:

Cayenne can be found in any grocery store. Applied topically, it can ease the symptoms of arthritis. To use it, mix the powder with water to make a paste, and apply to the affected areas. It can also help heal mouth sores, headaches and psoriasis. You can also mix a half teaspoon with water and drink it to lower your cholesterol.

Chamomile is often found in teas. Choose a chamomile tea to prepare you for a good night’s sleep and to ease any upset stomach pains you have.

Cinnamon can also be found in any grocery store. It helps ease allergies and fights bacteria that cause illnesses. It also helps reduce flatulence and relax aching or tight muscles. You can sprinkle it on your food or drink it with a cup of hot water.

Mint grows like a weed in many people’s yards. Cut a few mint leaves off to add to a steaming cup of hot water, and voila; you have mint tea. Mint is great at easing your stress, settling your stomach, and improving indigestion.

Ginger can be found in the vegetable section of your grocery store. It helps fight indigestion, morning sickness and motion sickness. Cut approximately 2 teaspoons of the root into chunks and add to hot water to make a tea.

Do Daily Check-Ups… On Yourself

Something that does not usually come up when discussing anti-aging is changes in health. When women get older, their risk of certain diseases and illnesses increase greatly and it is imperative to get screened for these things to keep healthy. Also, even some common changes in the body that are expected, like menopause, can have emotional effects on the person that are unexpected.

It is important to keep an open conversation with your doctor, because little things that come up may not be so little at all. See a physician who you are comfortable talking with, and do not be afraid to ask questions. All too often things go undiagnosed or are missed because a patient did not bring them up. Do not assume that your doctor knows everything about every disease out there, because they don’t. And do no assume that they can predict everything going on with you either, because they can’t. Doctors are facilitators of medicine and knowledge; they cannot predict the future and they cannot read minds. That’s why it is so important to let them know about any changes in your health, whether they be physical or emotional, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant.

Know what your health risks are, such as prevalence of breast cancer in your family or history of past illnesses. Know what factors increase and decrease your chances of remaining healthy. For example, smoking and stress are huge factors in being unhealthy, whereas a healthy diet and healthy weight are healthy attributes. Lastly, remind your friends to get screened for certain things too. Keep up on the latest information about diseases that concern you and know your body. These are just a few things you can do to stay healthy, there are many more, and remember to take your healthy very seriously, because if you don’t, who will?

How Stress Affects Your Life… And Leads to Aging

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

In order to stay healthy and fight the aging process, it is important to manage stress. This may seem simple enough, however, many struggle to keep things together. And this stress mounts and mounts until it negatively affects your health. In order to get happy, or remain in a state of contentment, you need to decide what is posing the most stress.

Work, whether it be schoolwork or a career, can be the primary source of stress in people’s lives. This can come from being unhappy at a job or being spread too thin with an intense workload. This leads to sacrifices made in personal lives. To fix this, it is best to assess if you have any options to move up in your career or maybe make a change if possible. A little stress is needed to keep motivation and to make progress, but too much is unhealthy. If you cannot make any big changes in your career, maybe take a day to organize your priorities at work or change your routine.

Other stressors can include family issues and emotional problems. Everyone goes through ups and downs with their families because of communication problems and differences in opinions. It is important to keep communication lines open and make family members aware of your needs to remain sane. Between family and work, emotional issues can form because everything building up over time can lead to a meltdown. Being in tune with your emotions is key to remaining healthy. Once other factors like work and school become emotional issues, stress can continue.

In order to reduce these stress indicators, it is important to organize all aspects of your life so that they do not lead to explosions. And remember, to reduce stress it is important to take time for yourself every day. Watch a favorite show, exercise, read a book. These things when done alone and with friends can greatly affect your health in a positive way.
