Oxidative Stress and Allergies Allergy is a disordered activation of the immune system in one or another of its many pathways. When an individual develops a disease involving the immune system, it is either because an element or component is missing (deficiency) or because the normal control mechanisms of the adaptive response have "misfired", resulting in the lack of an appropriate immune response or even too vigorous a response (dysregulation). Allergic reactions occur as a result of production of IgE which is one of five classes of antibodies (immunoglobulins) made by humans. This immediate hypersensitivity accounts for the classic allergic diseases that we treat. Although the exact mechanism is unclear, studies suggest a common link between oxidative stress and immune system dysfunction.
About Allergies
- When the immune system malfunctions, it can unleash a torrent of disorders and diseases. One of the most familiar is allergy.
- More than 50 million people in the US suffer from some allergic disease
- Sixth leading cause of chronic disease in the US, costing the health care system $18 billion annually
- The prevalence of allergies has increased dramatically worldwide in recent years.
Risk Factors
- Genetics
- Environment
- African Americans have higher rates of allergies and asthma
- Lifestyle. There is strong association between allergies and environmental factors such a socioeconomic status, family size, early-childhood infections, and diet. This area is still being researched.
- There is strong evidence that damage caused by reactive oxygen species is one factor in causing severe respiratory inflammation. That damage is called oxidative stress, and there is evidence that it is required to induce a robust inflammation, and the source of that stress is pollen.
Risk Reducers
- Infants who experience fevers before their first birthday are less likely to develop allergies by ages six or seven, according to a new study. The research is looking at whether the Westernized lifestyle keeps our immune systems confused, off balance, and unable to distinguish friend from foe.
- Recognizing that you have an allergy – as opposed to confusing it with a cold or the flu
- Antioxidants to inhibit oxidative stress
- Avoiding known allergy irritants such as:
- Cigarette smoke
- Dust mites
- Household dust
- Mold
- Pets
- Pollen
- Grass
- Certain foods
About Protandim® Protandim is a powerful, patented daily supplement that dramatically boosts your body's own natural defenses against free radical damage, a leading cause of oxidative stress.
At this time, there is no evidence that Protandim can treat, cure, or prevent allergies, but we do know its positive impact on oxidative stress. Because of the known link between allergies and oxidative stress, you may want to begin by lowering your oxidative stress, which Protandim is proven to do.
