Oxidative Stress and Colitis
Colitis is a digestive disease characterized by and sores, called ulcers, in the lining of the rectum and colon. Ulcers form where inflammation has killed the cells that usually line the colon, then bleed and produce pus. Inflammation in the colon also causes the colon to empty frequently, causing diarrhea. Oxidative stress and depletion of antioxidants may play a key role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease-related intestinal damage. Increased reactive oxygen metabolites levels in ulcerative colitis may result in a pro-oxidation environment, which in turn could result in decreased antioxidant activity and increased lipid peroxidation levels.
About Colitis
- Affects men and women equally.
- More prominent in whites than in non-whites, with the Jewish population being affected the most. Uncommon in individuals from Asia and South America.
- The mean age of incidence is 15 – 30.
- Incidence peaks again between 50 – 70 years of age.
- Appears to run in families.
Risk Factors
- There is no known cause for Colitis. However, studies have shown that oxidative stress and damage from free radicals has a role in the disease.
- Compromised immune system.
Risk Reducers
- Because the cause of Colitis is unknown, risk reducers are really symptom reducers/treatments, and vary from individual to individual.
- Lower oxidative stress, which reduces inflammation in the intestines and can help promote the healing of damaged tissues.
About Protandim®
Protandim is a powerful, patented daily supplement that dramatically boosts your body's own natural defenses against free radical damage, a leading cause of oxidative stress.
At this time, there is no evidence that Protandim can treat, cure, or prevent colitis, but we do know its positive impact on oxidative stress. Because of the known link between colitis and oxidative stress, you may want to begin by lowering your oxidative stress, which Protandim is proven to do.
