FIBROMYALGIA
Oxidative Stress and Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia (FM) is a common form of muscular pain and fatigue. The word "fibromyalgia" means pain in muscles, ligaments and tendons. Fibromyalgia is not a form of arthritis, although the symptoms may be similar. The cause of FM is currently unknown.  Patients with FM are exposed to oxidative stress and this increased oxidative stress may play a role in the pathogenesis of the disease. It is still not clear whether oxidative stress abnormalities documented in FM are the cause or the effect. The role of free radicals in FM is therefore controversial, however, malondialdehyde (lipid peroxide) levels are significantly higher and superoxide dismutase levels significantly lower in fibromyalgic patients than controls.  This shift oxidant/antioxidant balance in FM may be responsible for the development of the disease. These findings may support the hypothesis of fibromyalgia as an oxidative disorder.

About Fibromyalgia
  • Recognized as a rheumatic autoimmune disorder.
  • An estimated 3.7 million adults have FM.
  • Most common in women between the ages of 20 and 50, although it also affects men, the elderly and children.
  • Difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are common to various other disorders (musculoskeletal pain and reproducible tenderness in at least six specific points throughout the body). Constant interruption of deep sleep is also a common sypmtom.
  • FM patients typically have three times the normal amount of substance P (a chemical that tells the body how much pain it feels) in their spinal fluid.
  • Most people with FM have additional health problems.
Risk Factors
It is not known what causes this disorder. The medical community has begun to develop theories about how certain life events can act as triggers which somehow relate to its onset. While these triggers do not necessarily cause Fibromyalgia, it is thought that they might somehow awaken some underlying abnormality which then leads to the onset of the disorder.
Numerous research studies are being conducted which are hoped to give some answers to the complexity of this condition. Studies published in medical journals offer information to the healthcare profession which will assist them in making diagnostic and treatment decisions. Some of those studies are focused on the role of oxidative stress in FM, and the lowering of oxidative stress as a possible treatment.

About Protandim®
Protandim is a powerful, patented daily supplement that dramatically boosts your body's own natural defenses against free radical damage, a leading cause of oxidative stress.

At this time, there is no evidence that Protandim can treat, cure, or prevent fibromyalgia, but we do know its positive impact on oxidative stress.  Because of the known link between fibromyalgia and oxidative stress, you may want to begin by lowering your oxidative stress, which Protandim is proven to do.
