How Crosswords Keep Your Brain Young

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

Doing the crossword puzzle everyday will do more than keep you entertained for an hour or so. According to some recent studies, crossword puzzles help you stay young longer by creating new brain cells and “exercising” your mind. It is easy for those of us who are older to let our minds rest, but that will only allow the effects of aging to creep in that much quicker. Retirement from work is great, but don’t ever let your mind retire.

But crosswords are not the only brain game that will keep you young. Any brainteaser does essentially the same thing. All you really want to do is stimulate your brain. Just as you workout, you need to keep challenging yourself. If you have never done a Sudoku game, start on a easier level, and slowly work your way up. Personally, I know I couldn’t have started with the New York Times Crossword puzzle; I had to work my way up.

Brainteasers, especially crossword puzzles, lower the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease by almost 50%! So the question is why aren’t people doing crosswords everyday if they have such great results? The answer remains to be seen, but it seems that most people either do not know they can decrease those risks, or have mentally checked out and don’t really care anymore once they are done with work and retired. If you can get in a habit of doing the crossword when you are younger, it will benefit you greatly down the road.

Lose the Pills and Buy a Pet

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Forget the creams, pills, and supplements; buy a cat. According to many studies, owning an animal increases your life expectancy, lowers your chance of heart disease, and lowers your cholesterol. A pet is no longer an investment in you pleasure and happiness, but also in your health.

Pets help us stay younger and happier for many reasons. The first of which is companionship. Dogs are man’s best friends for a reason. People love their pets like they love their own children. Pets provide us with an outlet; they are always excited to see us making us feel needed and wanted. Everyone dog or cat owner can tell when their pet is excited or sad, and our pets try to make us happy just like we try to make us happy. This partnership is very beneficial in helping us stay young and energetic.

Exercise also helps us stay young, and by owning a pet you generally exercise much more. Whether you are taking your dog for a walk or simply playing with them in the backyard, you are up and moving and not sitting watching T.V. or playing video games. Pets, especially dogs, are always excited to play and go outdoors. Pets really prevent you from just sitting for hours because you have to get up often to let the outside or feed them. Many pet owners start running or go for daily walks because they just enjoy spending time with their animal.

Most importantly, pets love us and we love them. Love is an abstract term, but owning a pet can bring that if it is currently missing from your life. Even pets that are difficult because of behavioral issues or what not still are lovable. When your pet is growing up, you built a relationship, and it is these important relationships that keep us feeling and looking young. Pets are more than cute and fun. They are beneficial to your own wellbeing and youthfulness.
