Say No to Wrinkles and Age Spots

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Aging can now be simply about numbers and dates, not wrinkles and age spots. Although anti-aging products are not perfect, they can significantly improve your appearance. Just because you are adding years to your life doesn’t mean you should be giving up on your beauty; it is just a matter of finding the correct product for your skin type and your skin conditions.

Topical, over-the-counter (OTC), creams can be a great place to start. There has been a small amount of literature produced on anti-aging products, and in general a few compounds have proved to be the most effective. The first of which is Vitamin C. Vitamin C has shown to reduce fine lines and increase skin laxity, as well as improve the overall surface texture. The next OTC ingredient shown to be effective is Alpha-Hydroxyl Acids, found in lactic acid, glycolic acid, and citric acid. It is common in a lot of fruits and teas, and is now being used in OTC products. The last is known as pentapeptides, it’s quite scientific and has been shown to work great through a product known as Matrixl. These substances have been shown to have the best efficacy, and should be tried before moving on to more drastic measures.

The next set of anti-aging products are prescription products. In order to get the best information about these products, you should contact a dermatologist. They have all sorts of brochures and information that can help you decide great prescription products. One of those products is known as the botulinum toxin, and its common drug is Botox. Botox is actually a toxin and can kill you if you have too much. According to Wikipedia it is the most toxic protein product known, but after 4.6 million administrations you can be assured it is safe. A qualified dermatologist can assist you with Botox, and you’ll notice the lines decrease within days.

If topical and injected prescription anti-aging products leave you wanting more, then you may need to consider a facelift or laser spot removal. In addition, you can have the skin around your eyes and your eyelids lifted. These types of products are generally not cheap, but they will show immediate results. Surgical-anti-aging products should be considered as a last result, since, with every surgery, there is an inherent risk. Again, the best resource for surgical information would be a plastic surgeon or certain dermatologists.

When it comes to anti-aging, you have a lot of choices and you should start with cheaper and topical products, and move to prescription or surgery if you don’t see the results you want. No matter what, just because you are getting old doesn’t mean you need to throw in the towel and forget beauty.

Diet After the Holidays to Stay Healthy

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

The holidays are filled with rolls, eggnog, brownies, fudge, candy, and pretty much anything else you could imagine that is unhealthy, which is why immediately proceeding the holidays is the New Year, where we can all make a goal to live healthier and get in shape for the summer. Around this time of year, millions buy diet plans or health supplements to aid them in their quest for the perfect body. However, some of these products are effective and some are not. Finding the correct plan for the New Year is not an easy task.

Many people set such lofty expectations for their New Year’s Diet that it is impossible to fulfill their goal. A diet needs to be sustainable, meaning that you have to be able to live while you are on it and do it for a long amount of time. Any diet that limits your choices of food to just a few things is not going to work. For instance, a friend of mine tried a diet in which she only ate salmon and fish related products for nearly a month. Sure, fish oils and the nutrients found in salmon are good for you, but they only make up a part of your entire nutritional needs. Another popular “diet” is the protein diet in which you only eat foods that are mostly protein, like nuts and egg whites. These are more fads than diets. Also, no one can survive by only eating 500 calories a day, or some other ridiculously low number. Make your diet feasible and realistic.

If you are considering a nutritional supplement to aid in your new diet, like Acai berries, or a more chemical-based weight loss supplement, understand that those are secondary to diet and exercise, meaning you shouldn’t expect to completely lose all of your weight because of them. Some supplements are good aids, but if you read carefully you see that none are effective without a proper diet and exercise schedule. Just make sure the supplement is not counterproductive by being harmful to your body, and don’t expect the supplement to be a cure in and of itself.

New Year’s diets are great goals, and even if you try and fail, at least you ate healthier for a few months. The most effective way to get in shape is to hire a trainer and nutritionalist, but they can be expensive. Increasing your exercise alone will make you healthier, as will cutting out unnecessary food like lattes or candy; sometimes it is best not to overcomplicate the situation and just stick with the basics.

Don’t Forget Your Vitamin K

Thursday, December 25th, 2008

Vitamin K is not well-known compared to others like Vitamin C and A, but it is proven to have a lot of health benefits. Vitamin K is an antioxidant that fights harmful free radicals that work slowly to break down the body. Some view aging as a collection of free radicals that have built up in the body which become too much for the immune system to deal with. Vitamin K is a leader in the battle against anti-aging and perhaps one of the most effective supplements to work against the aging process.

What does this vitamin do? For starters, it helps blood coagulate in the body and helps against the deterioration of the body. The K vitamin is a relatively new subject, since it was thought previously that we had enough K in our bodies to fight disease. We know now that this is not the case for most people, who actually suffer from a certain level of K deficiency. Researchers believe that as we grow old, we experience inflammation in our organs. To deal with this, the body increases and decreases its use of certain hormones accordingly. One of those hormones that increases during the time of need is Interleukin 6, which eventually leads to increased inflammation. Vitamin K is shown to reduce the affects of Interleukin 6.

How does inflammation lead to aging? When we age we experience such inflammation in the body that it leads to disease. The inflammation has been shown to lead to other things that eventually lead to heart disease and osteoporosis. Damages experienced by both the heart and lungs have been reduced with the introduction of Vitamin K. Furthermore, the vitamin has been linked to positively affecting blood sugar levels, Alzheimer’s Disease, and risk of stroke. Foods that are rich in K are leafy green vegetables and other vegetables, and some cheeses. The consumption of hydrogenated oils can stop the health benefits of Vitamin K from occurring in the body also, as it serves as a blocker.
